gods, there is nothing more singularly depressing than knowing that it'll be a cold day in hell before you'll wake up in the morning and not owe somebody money.

Waking up knowing you owe that much and you have no job, no savings and kids to feed. Trust me, that's worse.

There are plenty of things much more depressing than owing money. Come on, you're a creative thinker -- I bet you could come up with 20 or so on your own without breaking a sweat.

If it makes you feel any better, I can tell with some degree of certainty you likely owe money to a bank, or bank-like institution (such as a credit card company.) Many of those institutions wake up every morning knowing that they, in turn, owe wads of money to the Chinese.
