kjpepper: (flying naked)
[personal profile] kjpepper
It's funny, I don't know how or why I always have this idea firmly stuck in my head that traveling places by plane is hideously and prohibitively expensive, cause whenever I actually get past this idea enough to actually look airfare up, it never actually is. With a bit of carefully saved money (which I actually am getting a lot better at doing) I could probably afford one or two trips somewhere interesting per year. I mean, a ticket across the country would add up to two trips home to NY on the damn bus from here. Just sayin.

We'll just also ignore the fact that I have a mild fear of flying also working against me. Nothing crippling or anything, I will actually board a plane with little fuss and likely sleep through the entire flight, but there is the mild woogy feeling on takeoff that always gets me. Yeah yeah, I know statistically I'm WAY more likely to meet fiery doom on the highway than on a plane but there is that lizard brain reaction of HOLY SHIT WHAT'S HOLDING UP THIS THING that strikes sometimes, whereupon my Evolved Self answers "Physics. Now shut up."

I don't know if I can scrape up the funds to head to Ohio in November, though I'm sorely tempted and could probably swing it if I did some creative accounting. But even if I don't make it there then, I have no excuse for not making it next year, barring complete economic disaster, riots, nuclear winter and John McCain being elected president. Likewise I think even with the tentatively scheduled craziness already slated into the next year, there is also no insurmountable reason why I can't put in a trip at least to either Austin or the Seattle/Redmond area (as I have pockets of people in both places that want me to visit). Or hell, maybe both. If I can manage to do that next year, maybe then I can start finally planning to get the hell off the rock and cross the pond. I often forget that there's an entire world out there that google image search simply doesn't do justice, and maybe I should see some of it while I still can.

In less abstract news, [livejournal.com profile] sundart and I spent a little time this afternoon discussing plans for the upcoming winter, specifically ways to save on energy costs (wrapping every window in the house, long underwear, new blankets for the beds and such like) and supplies to get just in case shit gets even worse on a national level. We're not thinking bunkering down with boxes of tuna or anything, but she was thinking it would be a good idea to invest in some canning supplies and some wardrobe essentials, and frankly I agree with her. I've got a bad feeling about the upcoming winter, like it's going to be rough both weather wise and in other ways... so I'm all for a little battening down the hatches. Storm ahead, yarrr.
