kjpepper: (happy me (grass))

I went to see Finding Nemo tonight, with [livejournal.com profile] beatgoddess, [livejournal.com profile] sundart, [livejournal.com profile] primitive_boy and Brit Girl. Pixar strikes again! Seriously, I love Pixar movies. They are just the masters of small environment comedies. They take a small space, like a kids room or a closet or a fish tank, and then dream up these totally wacky and absolutely hilarious situational comedies within that small space. It takes some storytelling skill to take the participants of these microcosmic dramas and blow up their concerns to a level where we actually give a shit.

That said:
Nemo did not disappoint. It was beautifully rendered, in yummy undersea color, not to mention Sydney actually looked like Sydney, as far as I could tell, although nobody really had much of an Australian accent. I thought the characterizations were fascinating - a couple of puns on "schools" of fish were not out of place, and I totally envied the kids their stingray teacher. I thought the squid ink was a creative use of potty humor too.

Oh my gawd, those seagulls were hilarious. Especially when they are all staring at the crab that's fending them off with kung fu. "Mine?" "Mine?" "Mine?" "Mine?" "Mine?" "Mine?" "Mine?"

Whose idea was it to have sharks in a 12 step program?? They need to be awarded.

Love the school of fish making different shapes and poking fun at Marlin.

Ellen DeGeneres did such a marvellous job as Dory, I nearly wet myself laughing at her attempts to speak various dialects of whale. I wonder if Leonard from Memento needs a pet fish . . . nah, he'd forget and either feed it to death or forget and not feed it at all.

The characters in the fish tank were so nicely done. "Look! Scum Angel!" I also liked how in their boredom they have schooled themselves in the jargon and procedures of dentistry. Also their little initiation ceremony for Nemo was really funny. Take a trip to the top of Mt. Iwanahokalugi, anyone? I also appreciated the fact that during the credits you do learn that they do eventually get out of their little baggies and go play in the ocean.

I liked the turtles too. They were so mellow. 150 years old, dude. And still young!

One word of advice about this movie. Stay for the credits. Not only do you get to see the characters again, playing around in the water, but one or two surprises crop up at the very end.

Overall, I liked it a lot. We're going to have to give this one 2 snaps up in a circle. Oh yeah - I still owe [livejournal.com profile] labmouse a prize for that last one. :)

In other news, I am continually frightened and yet fascinated by the people who religiously play Dance Dance Revolution on the two machines in the Hampshire Mall and are good at it. (I tried it once, with very discouraging results.) There are always two types of people that seem to be good at it - tall willowy Goth looking Asian boys, and stocky - fat guys of all other ethnicities, specifically this Latino guy with a mop of curly hair that is mad quick - and he does the special thing where you can take up both of the foot pads, rather than just the one, and does crazy stuff like run around the backs of them to get to the other side before the next wave of music. They have to be practicing at home or something - but somehow the thought of that possibility is even scarier. "Are you a monkey?" Yes, I am! but somehow amid the horror, I kinda wish I was good at it. :)

Going to Six Flags tomorrow! First stop on the agenda is an Olde Time Photographe (anything to dress up like a wild west brothel madam! Whoo) and then much junk food and rides. Yay!
