Aug. 31st, 2005 08:06 amyes I heard about the yahoo news celebrity racism circus. Yes that is some fucked up shit right there, and I'm annoyed (but not surprised). But if another person posts this shit without using an LJ cut, I'm going to shoot them. Your righteous indignation does not overrule basic rules of consideration for other people and their possible lack of broadband connections. Once was fine, but if you're going to repost this issue in your own LJ, either link to one of the comms from whence it came (it's a public post in
blackfolk) or cut it - I'm sure if you put "THIS IS RACIST" in your cut text, everyone who would be pissed off about it would click the link anyway.
Seriously people, I got five uncut copies of that on my flist this morning.
Right now I'm pissed off at something I can't articulate very clearly. And I have to go to work. bah.

Date: 2005-08-31 02:35 pm (UTC)I find it annoying that racism is still a damn topic of conversation thanks to guys like that. Why in the world people can't just grow up and get over stupid shit like skin color is beyond me. I find it annoying in the same way when I get the sexism card played. Which thankfully isn't often, but I can't help but look at those people like they're big-browed Neanderthals when I hear something inane come out of their mouths.

Date: 2005-08-31 10:32 pm (UTC)I have been thinking about the same issue the last two days because:
1) On the news last night, every time they talked about "looters", they showed the same young black men leaving a story. I would guess that if you keep showing the same image over and over again, associated with the word "looters", some people are going to make a mental association. Of course, there wasn't a lot of footage and given NOLA's population distribution, perhaps it's fair. But still, it seemed that perhaps that they could give that particular image a rest. My GF and I were talking about this last night.
2) This person you linked to makes a point that in every case posted, the people were "looting" food. I call that scavenging or survival myself, not looting. It's not like the food is going to survive the floods, but it could help someone now. Last night we were saying - if you're taking food or diapers, more power to you. If you're taking a TV, well..you can't take it with you when you get helivack-ed, so it seems kinda dumb but your prerogative, I guess.
What I don't get is stealing guns and shooting people....I guess now we really know what would happen in case of a real emergency...our neighbors would buy guns and kill us. Whee.
