kjpepperSo remember three or four years ago when the first Pirates of the Caribbean came out and we all went to see it thinking there was no way in hell it could possibly be any good and then it actually didn't suck balls? yeah. I'm feeling much the same about the new Hairspray movie right now. Seriously both it and Ratatouille are battling it out for the best movie of the summer in my opinion.
So first off, I'm pretty biased because I fucking love me some movie musicals. This one... oh it didn't disappoint. Really my only large quibbles with it were technical (there were a few points where the sound mix was off and you couldn't hear the singing too well.). But things I fucking loved.
1) Nikki Blonsky. OMG She is the cutest thing EVAR. I can't believe they managed to find the most amazingly gorgeous little (and i mean little, she's 4'10") chubby girl out of a high school somewhere! I spent the entire movie wanting to either hug her, pinch her cheeks, or kiss her.
2) I was most iffy about John Travolta pulling a Norbit in this role, but I was actually pleased by the job he did filling Divine's shoes here. By the time they flash to him delicately mincing about in a spangly flamenco dress with Christopher Walken I was sold.
3) Speaking of which, I'm not sure which is more terrifying - John Travolta dancing in high heels, a fat suit and a seriously spangly dress, or Christopher Walken singing. Or the fact that they're actually pretty believable as a married couple.
4) In the twelve hours that have passed since seeing this movie it is quite conceivable that both Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer have gotten hotter. And in another 12 hours, they will have gotten hotter still. Both of them are ridiculously beautiful women.
5) Alison Janney! What the hell are you doing in this movie?? Squee!
6) Who was that cutie that played Inez?? So Dee from What's Happening!
7) The soundtrack. I'd never seen the broadway show, so this was love at first listen. Must obtain.
So yeah... See it if you can. It's good fun, and unless you actually own one of those TVs it's going to lose something on DVD. :)
