what sort of doctor do you see if you've recently noticed a problem with your hearing? Lately, like in the past month lately, I'm noticing that I'm having increasing difficulty filtering audio input, which is troubling because I'm usually really comfortable in noisy environments, but just in the past little while I notice I'm having difficulty pulling spoken conversation out of background noise, or really focusing on stuff I want to hear over any sort of extraneous noise, which is something I never used to have an issue with before. I can still hear everything, but something seems to be going loose in the wiring when processing it.

An ear/nose/throat doctor would be the first stop, though they may end up referring you to a brain doctor (glasses...mustache...hankerchief...).
Me, I've had that problem for years. If you find the answer, be kind and share it with the rest of the class.

I've had that issue since I was a very little girl, I used to have to see a specialist. If it's what I think it is don't fret; they'll just use a weird long tube to get a **LOT** of ear wax and gunk out of your ear canal and you'll be good as gold. I need to go have it done but I'd rather just torture my friends and make them repeat themselves 32 times... >;-)

The way HMO's are now, you will have to see your regular doc and he MAY be able to take care of it. More thank likely you will be referred to someone.

depending on your insurance, your PCP will probably have to see you first, then refer you to a specialist. either an ear/nose/throat doc, or specifically to an audiologist. they might do a hearing test on you to make sure you're not having actual hearing loss. also, a friend in my dorm in college who was suffering from hearing loss, but it just turned out to be earwax. she got it removed by a nurse and was fine. i got my hearing tested as a kid because i have tinnitus, but it doesn't seem to interfere with my hearing.

and ive been having trouble filtering out background noise, too. ive noticed it tends to happen when im multitasking too much in life in general, not necessarily at that particular moment. the frazzle tends to carry over, y'know?
