So I'd been wiped out all week and didn't get much sleep last night due to a bit of an emergency so I was down in the living room this afternoon watching DVRed History Channel (I'm a bit of a Modern Marvels junkie) and I fell asleep.

Except not. Ever hit that state of (un)consciousness where you're still completely aware of your surroundings, but you can't move or wake up any more than you are? Yeah I was like that for about half an hour. I could hear people talking (in some cases to me) but I couldn't answer or anything. That, and I could feel myself breathing funny. Not at all fun.

On top of that... man I hate it when I dream/hallucinate that I've gotten up and did something, and then wake up and find out that it was a dream/hallucination and I actually have to get up and do whatever it was I dreamed I did. Usually it's getting up and getting dressed for the day; this time it was getting up and taking pills.

Blor.

It's called Sleep Paralysis and it SUCKS. It's very common and about 10x more common in women of color (naturally) and very likely due to stress (again, naturally). I've suffered from it off and on since I was a child but it got BAD after I became a mom, to the point of talking to my doctor. I had to change my sleep rituals a little, and learn to tell myself what was going on and ride it out easier.

Maybe you had sleep paralysis, which is sometimes referred to as a hag dream. I had a really creepy one not too long ago. Fortunately, I kind of knew what was going on while it was happening, and didn't freak out too much.

I agree with what a previous poster said. They're usually brought on my stress, and I was under a lot of it when it happened...
