kjpepper: (monsieur pussycat)

Man, I've gotten so used to rolling out of bed between 5:30 and 6:30 that waking up at 7:30 feels like oversleeping even though it still leaves me with a more than respectable hour and a half before I have to be at work.

There is blissfully nothing notable about today. It's just going to be go to work , get shit done, and then get on the bus afterwards, go to Amherst, sample the restaurants, and then go see Get Smart, though I must say I'm tempted to change my mind and go see The Fall instead if [livejournal.com profile] sydneycat is amenable - most reports say amazing things about it and since I'm already going all the way to Amherst.... I could always see Get Smart at some other point in the next week. Course next weekend, both WallE and Wanted come out... Robot Love vs James McAvoy being lickable shooting things... curse you, summer movie season and actually having movies I want to watch for once. Curse you.

Ick. I think I need to stop being in denial about the fact that I can no longer eat raw bananas, which blows considering I like to move it move it put them into smoothies. But yeah I tossed one into the blender along with [livejournal.com profile] sydneycat's leftover morning fruit-thing and while it tastes really good, my mouth and throat are now all swollen and itchy. Fuck. I'm kinda bummed about it because I don't like very many fruits as it is because most of them are the wrong texture. (Easily solved by throwing them in the blender, but I can't carry one around with me at all times. :P) Bah. Guess I'll have to find my potassium elsewhere.

*sigh* - and now I've just managed to chew off a hangnail deep enough to bleed. Off to find a band-aid.

ETA: or as they call them so charmingly in the UK, "sticking plasters."

Does the banana thing happen all the time? I ask because I have that same reaction for *unripe* bananas, strawberries, kiwis and nuts. My mouth gets itchy and sometimes breaks out in little white spots, and then the whole thing goes away maybe 15 minutes later.

Granted the one I tried today was a little less than ripe (not green, but still mostly yellow - alas, that's generally the stage where I prefer to eat them normally) but the last couple bananas I had were overripe and I still got itchy. However banana bread and Odwalla pose no problem, so I'm thinking there just needs to be cooking/processing of some sort before I can consume them.

I have always, always reacted to unroasted nuts, but a friend of mine said she assumed she was just allergic to nuts until she tried organic ones. No reaction. I tried some unroasted organic nuts at her house. I think there was a tiny reaction, but nothing like there has always been. We wonder if it's the chemicals.

Oddly, there's a correlation between banana allergies and latex allergies. I have no idea why. Not that I don't think you wouldn't have noticed by now if you were allergic to latex, but if you didn't used to be allergic to the bananas either, you might keep an eye out.
That being said, though, my sister has the 'raw bananas make my tongue itch' thing too...and she is not allergic to latex.
