Day at the Movies (Spoileriffic!)
Jun. 29th, 2008 09:32 pmIron Man - Still pretty damn excellent. And this time I did indeed spot Captain America's round sheild, lying half completed on a workbench during the sequence when the robots were having trouble pulling Tony's armor off. Geek squee.
Wanted - I enjoyed it. Curious about the comic now, as I remember sixswordsamurai stating it was even more bloody and fucked up. But yeah. A review of it I read said it was stunts with a side of stunts layered in car chases and gratuitous violence. That's about right, with a healthy helping of the unexpectedly sculpted abs of James McAvoy. And any movie where Morgan Freeman swears is badass. Loved the nods to Office Space, there.
Get Smart - as a rabid fan of the original (let's just say somewhere in my belongings is a videocassette with a recording of Get Smart Again on it... not to mention the reason why my oldest, favoritest teddy bear is named Max) I can say that they did this very very right. AND HOLY CRAP PATRICK WARBURTON AS HYMIE OMG SQUEE YES YES YES. I don't care if he was only on screen for like 90 seconds! Also so much love for Masi Oka... "The spiders have to be milked by hand. And they don't like it." AHAHAHA. And what was The Great Khali doing in this movie and why was he so good? Also kudos for them playing the dance sequence off tastefully and adorably instead of making it into the fat joke I was preparing to cringe horribly through. Well done.
WALL-E - This was as amazing as everyone says it is. I don't know how a love story about two inanimate objects manages to be better than any love story I've seen involving people, but it is. Honestly, I could have done without any of the human characters and just have watched WALL-E go through his days and discover new things to add to his collections, feeling his pet cockroach Twinkies (was anyone else reminded of Crikee from Mulan?). Or spent an hour being enchanted by him and EVE flying through space. Really I have a bit of a crush on EVE myself - especially her giggle. She's... pretteh. :) But yeah, I felt like the story didn't hold up quite as well when it tangented off of the love story and into the WE MUST TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH (and ourselves) message, but eeeeek. Robot love, man. It made me cry. And as Jhonen Vasquez said on his Twitter, it "reminded me that my face is useful for more than just scowling."
A quite satisfactory 9 hours at the movies, all told. Though I really really could have done without a trailer full of singing dancing chihuahuas in Aztec headresses. Whoever greenlit Beverly Hills Chihuahua should be shot somewhere non immediately fatal and left to bleed out with his eyes propped open while watching his/her abominable creation. Jesus.

Date: 2008-06-30 04:56 am (UTC)I enjoyed the dance sequence in Get Smart very much! I thought the woman Max danced with was obviously an excellent dancer and it was clear that she was enjoying herself. :D
I agree with you about Wall-E not needing human characters. :)
