I don't normally get all boohooey about celebrity deaths, but this one hit me kinda hard today.

"Golden Girls" star Estelle Getty dies at 84

Gods... so much of my tween years can be summarized by what was on TV on which nights. And Saturday night at 9, Mom and I were religiously in front of a TV watching this and laughing our asses off. I still stop and watch if I accidentally happen by Lifetime while channel surfing (which doesn't happen too often due to the "favorites" option on the cable box, but every so often...) And Estelle Getty and her extremely smart mouthed alter-ego were indeed the best part of an already fantastic show. Really, who knew a show about neurotic older ladies would turn out that screamingly hilarious?

Rest in peace, Estelle, and thank you for being a friend.

we've got Comcast cable, I don't know how it works in your neck of the woods. but generally with digital cable boxes you have an option to set up a customized menu of your favorite channels that you can then use to browse the TV listings without paging through the 402 sports/news channels you don't watch.

I will discuss this with Rick....

I don't want to have to look through a kabillion channels when all I watch is Comedy Central, Discovery, A&E, History, National Geographic, and the networks. I thought I had no choice....

This changes everything.

frankly I kinda hope the FCC and the extreme right religious advocates win their battle against televised indecency, only cause it means a la carte cable for the rest of us. Gods, a world where you can pick which cable channels you want to have and not have to pay for the ones you never watch!

It will actually cost more that way. When everyone pays for all the channels, it is cheaper to add things like, say Discovery Health that not everyone wants but I feel some strange need to watch.

That might actually be worth the extra cost. And if all the channels are competing for subscription it might actually improve the programming.

But then how would I watch people who eat 30,000 (I'm not kidding) calories a day talk about how it isn't their fault that they weigh 800-1000 lbs.?
