Sitting here after a nice long scalding hot shower (one of those marathon ones that includes shampoo and shaving), with a towel wrapped around my head, I'm reminded of an amusing conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] morlock a couple months back. He was basically watching me towel off and and was especially fascinated with the process of making the towel turban around my hair... to the point of asking "how do girls learn to do that?"

I had to really think about that, and the thing is, I don't know. It's one of those second nature things by now. But I had to learn it somehow. Did I teach myself? Did I watch my mother do it? Did I access some Dune/Clan of the Cave Bear-like ancestral memory pertaining to post-bath towel origami? Am I just a hoopy frood like that about towels?

How did you learn?

I just... did it for myself one day. My Mom always towels her hair off immediately and doesn't walk around with a towel turban, but I saw it in a movie or TV show and thought, hey maybe I should try that, and figured it out myself.

I clearly remember my mom teaching me to do it. Likewise, I have showed my girls how to do it in response to being asked.

Movies and teevee!

We went to a fair amount of movies when I was younger, and yeah, that whole process was fascinating. It wasn't until much later that I attempted it... I think, just before I got to jr. high.

i think it's a feeling -- a "is this gonna fall off my head?" feeling, where you might not know what works, but you know what gets mocked.

My mother use to do it to my hair when I was little. I eventually learned to do it myself.

I was surprised when Marn couldn't do it (I tried to teach him, and he just can't manage). I'd always thought it was just something people with long hair or particularly absorptive hair did.

Made it up. Still not sure if I'm wrapping the same way everyone else is, but it works for me.

Now I feel like this was a barely-disguised psychological test... :)

I'm relatively sure I learned it watching my mom. But it is an interesting part of girl culture. I betrayed the sisterhood when I taught the trick to my ladyboi last year, but only kinda because, hey, part girl. :)
