I've always been skeptical of nationalism because of the destruction it has caused in the past. I think people should be aware of what's happening around them and ready to speak out in the face of injustice instead of blindly following a country or a person. Things have been particularly bad since about 2003. I've been ashamed of the American flag since we went into Iraq because it has come to stand for bullying and torture. When my neighbors put up an American flag, I cringed. I refused to put one on my house or car because of the abuses our country has perpetuated on others. To be honest, it's going to take me some time to not cringe when I see an American flag...even with Obama in power. My opinions on what this country has become over the past eight years are that strong.
And finally, Obama has promised to work on turning things around in this country. I really hope that he does what he promised to do and doesn't let us down.
agreed on all points. But yesterday I was very proud of all of us. Voter turnout was staggering, and the fact that Obama won by such a landslide I think says something about us as a whole. Something loud enough to at least make looking at the flag so much less ignominious. It way well be a temporary feeling, but I'll cling to it for a few hours longer. ;)
Get me the flags of the four states that passed anti-gay initiatives so I can poop on them, however.... I kid, I kid... or do I...
