I feel a bit like I'm in one of those old 1950's science fiction movies tonight, as [livejournal.com profile] beatgoddess is listening to samples of Alessandro Moreschi recordings, and either due to the recording quality (they do date from like 1904) or because of this man's voice, I'm very strongly reminded of a theremin. It's a little freaky, to tell you the truth - Moreschi was the last castrato ever. And the only one to make it onto any sort of recordable medium. It's kind of boggling to think about how a vocal quality like that, fairly odd sounding to modern ears was fairly commonplace two hundred years ago.

Suddenly I have this unholy urge to both rent Farinelli again and reread Anne Rice's Cry To Heaven...

Acutally, according to my opera class, the castrati were concidered "weird" and "abnormal" even 100-200 years ago. Their voices squigged a lot of people.

Where did she get the recordings? I have only heard him once, it was SO STRANGE!
