We're back!

It was a good trip out to Hellmira to visit the Zaks, and I am proud of myself for surviving the entire trip without internet, since apparently Time Warner Cable hates Casa Zak this week. We were treated upon arrival with a rousing story of how and why. :) But I'm jumping ahead - first a Sharkbait Hoohaahaa is in order for [livejournal.com profile] anzovin, who drove us there and back again, braving trucks, Massholes, an inordinate amount of RV's, and bits falling off his car to get us to our destination. (Not a vital bit, mind, just the plastic strip that separated the driver's side front wheel well from the rest of the undercarriage. The part where we drove ten miles with it hanging noisily off the car was... fun. I think that's the only picture we took of the whole minivacation though.)

But yeah... Friday was [livejournal.com profile] zadnyl's birthday, which was thoroughly celebrated by a much talked through viewing of We're no Angels (the Bogart version), homemade mint chip ice cream and the yummiest, spongiest chocolate cake topped with tangy mint frosting. :) And an evening kicking back with the Zaks. I love [livejournal.com profile] sundart's family - so laid back, funny and well, despite the mostly good natured bickering, the closeness is very apparent. I wish they lived closer by, especially now that [livejournal.com profile] jz898 and [livejournal.com profile] zadnyl have grown up into damn cool people. :) I wouldn't mind seeing them more often - but 5 hours is a pretty stiff drive.

Which reminds me, I have got to get back on the driving thing. That and I have to replace my iPod.

Yesterday was spent at the Corning Glass Museum, out to lunch, finding a whole new wealth of dirty music from the Kids (reminds me, gotta find that "I like Big Tits" song) and wandering around Ithaca Commons. The Corning Glass Museum was pretty kickass - obviously the bit about optical glass and fiberoptics was all interactive and up my alley, but there were a couple of things in the History of Glass displays that knocked my socks off. One was a display of these... gigantic... candlabra. One was freestanding the other was a chandelier, and were just these ostentatious displays of heavy glass dangly bits and ... wow. The chandelier was the same, only it was this deep rich shade of green. They dated from the late 19th century, and apparently these chandeliers not only came in green and clear, but blue and red too. Goddamn.

The other bit was this one here, which is unfortunately not done justice by the photograph. Staring down in it and following the little paths seen through the sculpture, it felt a little bit like staring down into sets from the Neverending Story movie, the bit with the Southern Oracles anyway.

damn forgetting the camera.

Anyway, we rejoined the Kids for lunch (we'd lost them on the way to the museum due to having three cars), at a local pizza joint (mmm, sicilian and slushieee), then we all decided to go to Ithaca and wander the Commons. Wow. And I thought the hippie population in Amherst was insane. But considering it's apparently quite legal to sell bongs and other interesting parephenalia in New York State, I shouldn't be surprised by the number of hippies in Ithaca. :) Still Ithaca was neat - kinda a cross between what I'd managed to see of Pittsburgh around the universities and Amherst, really.

Back home for Zak's yummy manicotti, and after sending [livejournal.com profile] anzovin to bed in preparation for the trip home, [livejournal.com profile] sundart, I and the Kids went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. some mildly spoilerish thoughts, nothing major tho )

And now... after a few hours of driving and teaching [livejournal.com profile] anzovin to use his cruise control, we're back. And I would ust like to say that every road trip should end with everyone in the car singing along to Weird Al's "Albuquerque" at the top of the lungs.

And now, to shower, actually get my hair some semblance of done since it was too hot to get it done all weekend, and pout hardcore about how I won't get to read Harry Potter until Tuesday.
