That's right kids, the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season has begun, and as part of my whole trying to find positive things about summer (not that hurricanes are ever a positive thing) I figured I'd make some note about how I find hurricane tracking interesting and am pretty riveted to the Weather Channel every time a storm notches above Cat 2. (Hurricane season is the only time the Weather Channel is as fraught with sensationalism and drama as any other cable channel, but they do it with pretty animated maps and smooth jazz.)

'Course it's always hard to admit that one is insanely interested in hurricanes, especially from a spot pretty well guaranteed to not ever get hit by more than the remnants of one. The damage and loss to human lives these storms cause is pretty sobering especially as people are still recovering from Katrina and her bitchy little sisters Rita and Wilma three years ago. Still, I watch the projected paths of these creatures, wondering if this will be the year one'll wander off the usual course again and manage to soak the Northeast. It's not out of the realm of possibility - I still remember Gloria quite clearly when it hit Long Island, and to a lesser extent the relief felt in NY when Bob missed us and hit eastern MA instead.

Well, we'll see. 2008 is prejected to be a well above average season, which doesn't bode well for the long suffering folk in and around the Gulf of Mexico (which is one of those places you couldn't pay me enough to live in for exactly this reason - tropical paradise my ass). I'll be downstairs glued to the Weather Channel.

Remind me not to read about psychiatric disorders on the internet anymore. I've just about half convinced myself that I have BPD.

Also Twitter needs to stop teasing me with IMs.

Is can be thunderstorm time nau? Oh wait... wow. You know it's gonna be bad when you can smell and feel the air change from inside a pretty much hermetically sealed house...
