So dragonsea.net now has this thing that tracks the referrers to specific files on the server. Jeez. The price of having pretty pics. There are more direct link off of weird forums than god leading directly to our server. Jeez, people, get your own hosting account. It's NOT THAT HARD.

*grumbly*

yeah, i had a problem with that too. dunno if your host offers this, but mine has hotlink protection- i can turn off hotlinking to all but a select list of sites. for instance, i allow google image search to link to my images, but people on bulletin boards can't and sellers on ebay can't. a bit of a pain to configure, but saves a lot of bandwidth.

thanks... I might do that if dragonsea offers it.

Y'know, a really good way to stop this....

...would be to rename the original picture and update it's img tags on your site - and then replace it with an (in)appropriate image...

A two colour gif that says "I'm an asshole who leeches images, and I'm also secretly a furry". or something would be good.

bandwidth leeching - instead of right clicking on a picture and picking "save as" and then uploading said pic into your own web site (sorta rude, but not potentially costing you anything), what's happening here is that various people are simply linking directly to the image on out site. So every time their web site or forum gets hit, the image still has to transfer from our server. Most people have a set limit of how many MB of data they can transfer in a month, and images are a lot bigger than web pages themselves so right there there's a bandwidth drain that you might not necessarily know about it's generally considered a gross breach of etiquette to link directly to an image on someone else's server. I mean, dragonsea doesn't get very much traffic so this is me being more annoyed than pissed off.

I link to pictures in my journal all the time; I had no idea it cost anyone anything. Damn.

*sits in the back with the comic geek*

So you aren't a secret furry, and I regret the implication... you're not an asshole either ;-)
