kjpepper: (underpants!)

It's been a damned long time since I've polished anything. Actually, I don't think I've done it since we lived on South Street... but gods I'd forgotten how much I love taking something dull, dirty, tarnished and lifeless and turning it into something bright and beautiful after hours of patiently sitting with the item in question, a bottle of Noxon or Brasso, and an old T-shirt cut into rags. I sit and I scrub, turning the cloth and to some degree my fingers utterly black with tarnish and watch, fascinated, as what were dull brown lumps of metal miraculously turn back into brass candlesticks, shined to a luxuriously glossy pinky yellow that reflects my wondering face back at me. It reminds me of when I was a kid and how I took down this ancient tea service from one of the mantels in my house and spent hours turning it from dull dark grey to mirrorball bright and then Mom and I had a tea party with it. God. That set had to have been my great great great grandmother's, and it's probably due for another polishing by now.

In other news, Preacher rocks. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] anzovin (for lending it to [livejournal.com profile] sundart) and [livejournal.com profile] morlock (for not being able to shut up about it), I think I can safely say that I have another graphic novel series to start collecting. Cause despite the fact that I'm behind on both Strangers In Paradise and Rurouni Kenshin, I was kinda feeling the lack after Transmetropolitan wrapped up, so this is good. Well drawn, funny as hell in a way that sorta reminds me of Transmet, and god-DAMN but I'm going to be snickering about space niggers for probably the rest of the week. On that note I need to go listen to Morcheeba's "Big Calm" on repeat just so I can hear the bit about niggers from another planet again.

Still some stuff to do before I sleep. But I kinda feel better now, so that's not nearly as onerous a prospect as it could be...
