Uy! That is not an exclamation it's a name. It's been bothering me the entire trip back.
By the grace of several serendipitous events, I am home, safe and sound and SANE! tonight. Today was by turns crazy, rushed, more crazy, downright surreal, happy, some more surreal and well yeah, all the sort of things that can be associated with a reunion, which was charmingly devoid of anything remotely Grosse Pointe Blankian (though the appropriate scene did cross my mind as I wandered the fourth floor of the building to "cruise by my old locker" as it were - luckily no French assassins interested in ballroom dancing, native American art and pornography leaped from the hallway to pummel me with kickboxing, thereby necessitating murder by pen.)
Anyway, reunion was. Yes. That is a good sentence. It was good to see everyone that showed up and quite a few did - I'd say I saw a good half of our graduating class there... maybe a little less. Anyway if any of you happen to read this, hi! There was much with the squealage and the hugs and the breathtakingly beautiful children (seriously, Henriette has the most gorgeous baby evar) and thank god for available wine and Corona 'cause otherwise it would just be wrong to be standing around with people that in some ways look different and in some ways look EXACTLY the same as you remember, drinking in the same library that you can very clearly remember being bitched out in for chewing gum.
UNIS itself has also stayed the same in some ways and in others changed a bit... I arrived at reunion somewhat early and was able to run around and take pictures. Photo essays are hard work, I've found - I started taking pictures when I got on the bus in Springfield and pretty much didn't stop until the battery gave up the ghost at the end of the reunion reception, but not before I'd gotten pictures of everyone there from our class. So I have about 200 some odd pictures of things to go through this weekend, as I'd promised everyone I'd toss them up soon. :) As
morlock pointed out, I am obviously a masochist. Still, there are some shots in there that I nailed and pictures of just about everyone who came out tonight, so I'm pleased. Tomorrow's challenge will be locating the battery charger (aka bugging
sundart to tell me where it is) so I can get the damn things off the camera, adjusted/corrected, and online.
[aside to
inle_rah] Hey, sweetie? do you remember the make and model of your old camera? the one I used for
sundart's pictures way long ago?
There were a fair amount of teachers and staff that turned out, although there were a few faces I was looking forward to seeing that I missed (noteably M. Bassene). Best of all, one of my history teachers has a weekend bolthole in Conway and was quite happy to have me along for the drive up, so perhaps my above statement should be by the grace of serendipitous events and the generous driving of Mr. Atkinson (must send him a thank you note) that I am home tonight... after a conversation that included such topics as animation, cars, cats, history, teaching, and the ever lost W (who, quite according to character, also was not in attendance tonight). *chuckle* Yes, Mr. Atkinson would remember that. Enough to twit me a little bit on how I run to type, as I happened to mention that
morlock was meeting me after a D&D game. *giggle* its true, I've always liked my boys gamerlicious, sue me. :)
Speaking of which, Scott, former grand high poobah of the Media Lab (and incidentally the one I blame for my current job description) showed up as well! He still looks the same, maybe a bit greyer around the edges and without the Breakfast Club proto-mullet he used to have. :) but he's going to totally be at SIGGRAPH (he's on the board or something) so when we go with
anzovin Studios this summer I should totally look him up. *chuckle* I wish I could introduce Scott and Jim Blau sometime - I can just see them shooting the shit over a few beers.
I'm glad I decided to go today, and I'm doubly glad that I decided to take the camera with me. Getting the pics online will be my big project for the weekend - that and stuffing myself at Taste of Amherst. :) Right now I should really crash, but I'm not sleepy yet, so maybe I'll watch some Taxi until I am. But before that, a quote from the always wonderfully random
jaicat, via voice mail:
"Give me a call, and we'll chew the beef... or the fat... or whatever it is people are chewing. What are the kids chewing these days? Isn't that a good question..."
