So my third shift being back in concessions, and lets see, the punch clock/computer flaked out, so no one was able to sign in or out all evening. I should have known it was just the beginning of the five hour spastic cha cha tonight. There were a bunch of little things, like I had to pop my drawer at least four or five times because I messed up change, gave someone the wrong soda at least twice... but the pieces de resistance (shut up, I'm too tired to do accents) were dropping a full candy drawer square on Brian Gallegher's foot diving for Reeces pieces and the incident with the popper kettle...

Let me explain a bit about movie theater popcorn machines. They're a glass box with doors (though no one ever actually uses the doors cause they just get in the way) a plastic gate that goes about four inches up from the bottom and this complicated kettle assembly into which the popcorn, salt and oil all get poured in, heated to about ten thousand degrees (well okay, not nearly that much but it's pretty hot) and then lo and behold popcorn starts roaring out of it, burning anyone lucky enough to have to stick their hands under it to fill an order. Towards the end of the popping process a really obnoxious alarm starts going off, telling you to dump the popcorn (basically tipping the kettle over by means of a handle on the side) and put the next round of kernels oil and salt in.

Today the kettle handle kept sticking. I'm sure this wouldn't have been too much of a problem had I been right handed, as no one else seemed to have an issue getting the kettle to tip over but I only managed it once all evening. So with that in mind, we're in the middle of the 10pm movie rush, the alarm goes off, no one else is paying attention so I go over to the popper, and pull the handle. The kettle doesn't move. Pissed off I yank on the damn thing and the whole side of the kettle pops out of its little socket. I frantically try to put it back, but instead the other side decides to pop loose and suddenly there is a ten thousand degree metal kettle sitting in all of the popcorn. Which is now burning, due to freaking hot metal in it.

yah, I felt stupid.

*sigh* i don't know, it was just that sort of day I guess. I'm still not 100% better after yesterday - my digestion's still a little off in the way of Hi! eating solid food hurts! Whoohoo! And due to the standing around I'm stiff from rib cage to toes. Hot shower and then bed. :P

We didn't have an obnoxious alarm at the Centuries - though it might have been preferable to burnt fucking popcorn. (More than a decade since I worked in the biz, and I STILL get irate when I smell that....)

yeah... luckily I still have my popcorn sense, so when I work the the back stand I can pretty much tell by ear when it needs to be dumped.

You are not the first person in the world to ever have tipped the hot kettle into the huge pile of popcorn. I've seen it happen, probably a dozen times, or maybe more. It's not good, but it's not the end of the world either.

*hugs*

It's true. Brian was pretty cool about it. But it's always devastating the first time it happens to you. :)
