The Dog Days
Jul. 3rd, 2006 04:25 amAccording to my favorite time-wasting activity (ie, mining Wikipedia for useless trivia) today is the official start of the Dog Days of Summer. Yes, I too thought it was just a weird expression, but no, it actually coincides to not only the hottest, nastiest summer days in much of the Northern Hemisphere, it is also the time when the Dog Star, Sirius, is invisible from earth as it sets and rises before and after the sun does. This period is from July 3rd to August 11. Arf arf pant pant.
As if this did not make the date of July 3rd ignominious enough, this was also the day that unfortunately birthed a certain tiresome celebrity that will remain unnamed here, but I'm sure the scientologists are celebrating mightily. Gah.
In other news... why am I awake at this hour? Oh yeah, I got up to turn the fan around. It is at last too hot to sleep without a fan going full blast pointed directly at you all night long... and silly me, I sleep on the 4th floor. Glarrrgh.
